Brahmanbaria Police Baton Charge Leaves Twenty Madrasa Students Injured

A cultural programme hosted by district law enforcement in Brahmanbaria descended into chaos late on Tuesday night following violent confrontations between police officers and local madrasa students, leaving at least 20 individuals injured. The clashes occurred at the police lines establishment in the town’s West Medda neighborhood after students repeatedly complained about high-decibel music blaring late into the night.

Dispute Over Late-Night Noise Triggers Sudden Confrontation

The incident unfolded at roughly 11:30 PM on 18 August during a musical performance arranged by the district police force. The event was held to honour an official visit by Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for the Chittagong Range. Although the senior police chief had already departed the venue after completing his formal itinerary, the entertainment session carried on at high volume well into the late hours.

Students residing at the nearby Jamia Darul Arqam Al-Islamia Madrasa approached officers at the facility, requesting a reduction in volume due to crucial academic examinations scheduled for the following morning. Although police personnel initially reduced the noise, organizers allegedly turned the amplifiers back up shortly afterwards. A second delegation of students returned to reiterate their concerns, leading to an aggressive verbal altercation with on-duty personnel.

Tensions mounted rapidly as approximately 100 madrasa students entered the police lines grounds to stage a formal protest. Police forces moved in with a heavy-handed baton charge to clear the compound, causing chaotic scenes across the venue. The force of the crackdown resulted in at least 20 students sustaining head injuries, deep lacerations, and bone fractures. Local residents rushed to the scene to assist in transporting the wounded to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital, where medical teams administered emergency treatment overnight.

Crisis Mediation and Agreement Reached

Organisers halted the cultural event immediately as news of the violent altercation spread throughout the municipality. To contain rising public outrage and avert potential civil unrest, Superintendent of Police Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf convened an emergency reconciliation session. He met with Sajidur Rahman, the founder of the madrasa and Secretary-General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, while District Council Administrator Sirajul Islam joined the talks to facilitate mediation.

During the session, religious leaders and student representatives put forward a uncompromising list of conditions. They demanded complete financial coverage for the medical care of all injured students, a transparent departmental inquiry, and swift punitive action against the officers responsible for ordering the baton charge. Additionally, the delegation demanded an absolute prohibition on future musical or entertainment events within the police lines premises, cautioning that any failure to meet these terms would prompt widespread regional blockades.

Superintendent Rouf acceded to all key demands, reassuring community leaders that a formal departmental investigation would identify those responsible for using excessive force. His commitment to swift administrative action helped de-escalate volatile conditions across the district.
