At a discussion meeting organized on the occasion of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud (Tuku) emphasized the importance of language, history, and national consciousness. He stated that to truly uphold the Bengali language, greater awareness, refinement, and historical responsibility in its usage are essential. He called upon the younger generation to be more responsible in preserving the dignity of their mother tongue instead of adopting foreign slogans and expressions.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event held on Saturday noon at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Sirajganj town, organized by the Sirajganj District Administration, the minister expressed concern over the frequent use of certain non-Bengali slogans among the younger generation. He remarked that if Bengali is to be embraced genuinely as the mother language, people must be cautious in their choice of words. According to him, expressions and slogans that have no direct connection with Bengali language and culture should be avoided.
He further stated that the spirit of the Language Movement and the Liberation War was rooted in the struggle to protect linguistic and cultural identity. Reflecting on that history, he questioned whether the nation is sufficiently attentive to preserving its language and heritage. In his view, no nation can achieve sustainable development without being aware of its own history. He added that the lack of adequate language and historical awareness has hindered the strong growth of nationalism.
During the discussion, speakers also highlighted the significance of the Language Movement, the historical context of the struggle for state language recognition, and the global recognition of International Mother Language Day. They emphasized that language is not merely a means of communication; it represents a nation’s identity, culture, and heritage. Therefore, proper practice of the language and an in-depth understanding of its history are indispensable.
The meeting was presided over by Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Aminul Islam. Among those present were Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division Mohammad Kamrul Islam, President of the Sirajganj Chamber of Commerce and General Secretary of the District BNP Saidur Rahman, along with representatives from the administration and various professional organizations.
The program began with a one-minute silence in memory of the language martyrs, paying deep tribute to their sacrifices. Speakers urged the younger generation to practice proper Bengali, engage in literary pursuits, and gain deeper knowledge of the history of the Liberation War.
Observers believe that collective efforts from the state, educational institutions, and families are essential to protect language and culture. They expressed hope that such discussion programs will play a positive role in safeguarding the dignity of the mother language and strengthening national consciousness.
