The ongoing speculation surrounding Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s potential transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS) is reportedly nearing reality. According to reports from the sports news outlet ESPN, negotiations between the veteran midfielder and Inter Miami CF are in their final stages, signaling a highly anticipated move to the United States.
Casemiro is currently under contract with the English Premier League club Manchester United, with his current deal set to expire on 30 June. The player had previously dropped hints regarding an exit from Old Trafford as early as January, paving the way for him to become a free agent. This status allows him to transition to MLS without a transfer fee. It is anticipated that he will formally join Lionel Messi’s current club during the league’s secondary transfer window.
Prior to the latest updates from ESPN, The Athletic had reported on the defensive midfielder’s prospective transfer. The 34-year-old former Real Madrid star attracted substantial interest from multiple global clubs, including MLS rivals LA Galaxy and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. Reports indicate, however, that Inter Miami remains Casemiro’s preferred destination.
Despite the advanced nature of the talks, Inter Miami must navigate strict MLS roster regulations before finalizing the registration. The club faces two distinct administrative hurdles:
Designated Player (DP) Rule: MLS regulations dictate that each franchise is permitted a maximum of three Designated Players whose compensation exceeds the league’s standard salary cap. Currently, Inter Miami’s three Designated Player slots are occupied by Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Jordi Alba.
Discovery Rights: The Florida-based club must resolve a dispute with LA Galaxy regarding ‘Discovery Rights’. Under MLS roster rules, the club that first places an international player on their discovery list maintains the priority right to negotiate. Because LA Galaxy currently hold these rights for Casemiro, Inter Miami will have to purchasing these rights from them to complete the signing.
