A former senior vice-president of the Narayanganj District Chhatra Dal, Sultan Mahmud, faces serious allegations of attempting to forcibly occupy a plot of land and erect a boundary wall in Rupganj upazila. The dispute involves a 17-decimal plot situated in the Baro Amdia mouza under the Daudpur union. Tension flared up significantly in the Kazirtek area on Tuesday, 14 July, forcing law enforcement personnel to intervene to bring the situation under control and halt the unauthorised construction.
According to local reports, the confrontation began when Sultan Mahmud arrived at the site with a group of men to build a perimeter wall on behalf of an individual named Helal. The 17-decimal land is actively claimed by another local resident, Ali Newaz. As Mahmud’s men commenced building, supporters of Ali Newaz arrived to obstruct the work, leading to an aggressive standoff between the two factions. The escalating dispute triggered widespread panic among residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity, who immediately alerted the local police station.
Eyewitnesses stated that the initial police dispatch ordered an immediate halt to all construction activities. However, Sultan Mahmud reportedly defied the directive, asserting that the work would proceed regardless of the police intervention. The situation threatened to spiral out of control until Mehdi Islam, the Senior Assistant Superintendent of Narayanganj District Police (G-Circle), arrived at the scene. Taking charge of the situation, the senior official issued a strict warning and ordered both parties to vacate the plot, enforcing a total shutdown of the construction site.
When questioned about the incident, Sultan Mahmud strongly denied the allegations of land grabbing. He stated that Helal is his paternal uncle who purchased the 17-decimal plot legally roughly a decade ago but had been unable to secure physical possession due to various complications. Mahmud maintained that he had only brought men to assist his relative in securing what was rightfully his, denying any use of unlawful force. Speaking via telephone, Helal confirmed that he had sought the political and social backing of his nephew to construct the boundary wall on the disputed land.
Commenting on the law and order situation, Senior Assistant Superintendent Mehdi Islam stated that the prompt deployment of police personnel prevented a potentially violent clash between the two groups. He confirmed that the area remains calm and that both parties have been strictly instructed to refrain from any further activity on the plot until the ownership documents are thoroughly scrutinised. The police administration is currently attempting to resolve the dispute peacefully through mediated dialogue based on legal land records.
