China Reports 44 Dead and 9 Missing Amid Torrential Rains in Beijing

Chinese authorities announced on Thursday that 44 people have been confirmed dead and nine remain missing after days of relentless rainfall triggered widespread flooding and destruction across Beijing and surrounding regions.

The figures were shared during a press briefing by Xia Linmao, a senior official from the Beijing municipal government.

“As of midday on 31 July, some 44 people have died and nine are still missing as a result of the disasters across the whole of Beijing,” Xia told reporters.

The devastating rains, which began last week, have led to severe flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage, affecting numerous districts within the capital.

Emergency services have been deployed extensively to search for missing persons, rescue stranded residents, and restore basic services to flood-hit areas.

The authorities have yet to release a detailed breakdown of the fatalities or the names of the missing, as rescue and recovery operations remain ongoing.

This tragic toll underscores the mounting challenges posed by extreme weather events in China, which experts say are increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change.
