A large consignment of illegal current nets and thread reels worth approximately Tk 39.15 crore has been seized by the Coast Guard during an operation in the Binodpur Dhingavanga area of Panchasar Union in Munshiganj. The information was disclosed in a press release on Monday (24 November) by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq.
He stated that, acting on secret information, a special team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted the operation at around 4pm yesterday, Sunday. During the raid, searches were carried out in six net-manufacturing factories and two warehouses.
Around 1 crore 11 lakh metres of illegal current nets and 60,000 pieces of thread reels used for net production were seized, with an estimated market value of Tk 39.15 crore.
Following the operation, all seized nets and thread reels were destroyed in the presence of the senior fisheries officer as per regulations, the Coast Guard official added.
Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq further stated that the Bangladesh Coast Guard continues regular operations to protect fishery resources and to prevent the production and marketing of illegal nets. Such activities will be strengthened in the future.
