Content Creator Faces Fraud Charges

A Bangladeshi content creator, Touhid Afridi, has been formally shown as arrested by court order in connection with a case involving allegations of fraud and breach of trust. He was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Monday, 15 June, after being brought from custody. Following a petition from the prosecution, the court granted the request to officially record his arrest in an ongoing case filed with Wari Police Station.

The hearing was conducted by Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat. During proceedings, the investigating officer informed the court that there were specific allegations linking the accused to an organised online fraud network. According to the prosecution, the group allegedly operated by luring individuals with promises of employment opportunities and financial returns, before systematically extracting money through deceptive means.

Details presented in the case dossier suggest that the alleged fraud began on 13 January 2025, when victims were first contacted through messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram. The accused network reportedly offered job placements and encouraged initial small “investment” payments to build trust. After establishing credibility, the victims were allegedly persuaded to transfer increasingly larger sums. In some instances, partial repayments were made initially to reinforce confidence, before the payments escalated and ultimately ceased. The complainant has alleged that a total of 235,000 Bangladeshi taka was misappropriated.

The case was filed at Wari Police Station by a victim, Syeda Ashfa Toaha Dyuti, naming several unidentified individuals alongside the principal allegation. Investigators have since claimed that evidence gathered during the inquiry indicates the involvement of Touhid Afridi in the broader scheme. Authorities argue that the operation was structured and premeditated, relying on digital communication channels to target and manipulate victims.

It is noteworthy that Afridi was earlier arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on 24 August 2025 in Barishal. He has remained in custody since that time. The latest court order now formally records his arrest in this additional case, further extending the legal proceedings against him.

Law enforcement officials have stated that investigations remain ongoing, with efforts continuing to identify and apprehend other members allegedly linked to the network. The case is expected to move into a more advanced stage of judicial scrutiny following the court’s latest directive, which will pave the way for formal framing of charges and subsequent hearings.
