Coronavirus Reemerges in Sylhet After 14 Months of Absence

SYLHET — Health authorities in the Sylhet division have confirmed a new case of coronavirus, marking the reemergence of the virus in the north-eastern region after a gap of nearly 14 months.

According to an official situation report released by the Office of the Divisional Director of Health in Sylhet on Sunday, 9 August, a 55-year-old man from Bishwanath upazila tested positive for COVID-19. The patient is currently receiving treatment in an isolation cabin at Shahid Dr Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, the primary facility designated for infectious disease care in the region.

Dr Mohammad Nure Alam Shamim, Assistant Director (Disease Control) of the Sylhet Health Directorate, confirmed the diagnosis late on Saturday night. He stated that healthcare personnel immediately isolated the individual upon confirmation to mitigate any risk of localized transmission. Medical staff at the hospital are keeping the patient under close monitoring, adhering to standard infection control protocols.

End of a Prolonged Infection-Free Period

The latest case breaks a prolonged period during which the Sylhet division reported zero new coronavirus infections. Official health records indicate that the last laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in the region was logged on 15 June 2025. Since that time, routine surveillance had consistently shown no active community cases, bringing a temporary sense of relief to local health administrations.

While the overall severity of the pandemic has waned globally compared to earlier waves, public health officials continue to maintain baseline surveillance to detect sporadic surges or new variants. The sudden identification of a positive case in Bishwanath underscores the persistence of the virus in human reservoirs and the necessity of continued vigilance, particularly among older demographics and individuals with underlying health conditions.

Hospital Response and Surveillance Measures

Shahid Dr Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, which served as the cornerstone of Sylhet’s emergency medical response during the peak of the pandemic, remains equipped with specialized isolation units and critical care infrastructure. Health officials reassured the public that the hospital possesses adequate resources to manage isolated cases without disrupting regular medical services.

Regional health authorities are currently conducting contact tracing to ascertain how the individual contracted the virus and whether any family members or close associates show symptoms. Officials have urged residents across Sylhet to remain calm, practice basic hygiene measures such as hand washing, and seek medical evaluation at the earliest sign of respiratory illness, especially for vulnerable family members.
