Court Grants Three-Day Custody in Extortion Case

A Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka has granted three-day remand for the prime accused, Moin Uddin, along with two of his alleged associates, in connection with a case involving extortion attempts targeting a specialist kidney hospital in the capital.

On Tuesday (14 April), Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam issued the order after hearing a petition submitted by the investigating officer seeking custodial interrogation. The other two accused placed on remand are MB Swapan Kazi and Md. Shaon Hossain.

According to the prosecution, the defence opposed the remand request and instead sought bail for the accused. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved three days of police custody for each of them.

Earlier, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sabbir Ahmed of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, had applied for a seven-day remand, arguing that further interrogation was necessary to uncover the full extent of the alleged extortion network.

The case was initially filed on 11 April by Md. Abu Hanif, the operating theatre in-charge of the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital. In the complaint, he alleged that Moin Uddin and his associates had been demanding five lakh taka from the hospital for an extended period and had issued repeated threats when the demand was refused.

Subsequently, four associates of the prime accused—Md. Falan Mia, Md. Rubel, Faruk Hossain Suman, and Md. Liton Miah—were arrested earlier in the investigation. They were also placed on a four-day remand on Monday as part of ongoing interrogation.

Allegations in Detail

The First Information Report states that the accused not only threatened hospital staff but also staged coordinated intimidation activities. On 10 April, they allegedly appeared at the residence of the complainant in Shyamoli area and demanded immediate payment of the extortion money. When the demand was refused, they allegedly issued threats of harm and engaged in disorderly conduct.

The complaint further alleges that the group later gathered a larger crowd—reportedly 50 to 60 individuals—outside the CKD Hospital, where they created public disorder, shouted slogans, and attempted to disrupt normal hospital operations. Their actions reportedly extended to the emergency department, raising serious concerns over public safety and disruption of medical services.

Police were eventually called to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control.
