A Dhaka court has ordered Mufti Mamunur Rashid Kasemi, founder of the ‘Ideal Marriage Bureau’, to be sent to jail. The decision was delivered on Sunday afternoon by Senior Judicial Magistrate Victoria Chakma at her courtroom in Dhaka.
The case against Kasemi was filed last Friday by the maternal aunt of his third wife, Tamanna Hatun, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Keraniganj Police Station. Following the complaint, police arrested Kasemi at around 3:00 pm on Sunday from his residence in the Atibazar area of Keraniganj.
Inspector Kamal Uddin of the Prosecution Division of Dhaka District Police confirmed the arrest, stating, “He was taken into custody based on a case filed on behalf of his wife. After a hearing in the evening, the court ordered him to be sent to jail. The court has also scheduled the hearing for his bail application tomorrow.”
According to the allegations in the case, Kasemi married Tamanna Hatun, lived with her for a period, and subsequently divorced her. He then allegedly detained her under the pretext of remarrying, keeping her in his custody from 6 September to 14 October, during which she was reportedly subjected to sexual assault.
The court’s decision to send Kasemi to jail reflects the gravity of the charges and the legal system’s commitment to ensuring protection for women. Law enforcement and judicial authorities have acted swiftly, emphasising the importance of due process in cases of abuse and harassment. The next stage of proceedings, including the bail hearing and continued investigation, will further determine the course of justice in this serious case.
