CR7 Cleared to Play in World Cup After FIFA Ruling

Many assumed that Cristiano Ronaldo might miss the start of the 2026 World Cup after receiving a red card in a World Cup qualifying match against Ireland, where he struck an opposing player with an elbow. Initially facing a three-match suspension, Ronaldo served only one match, as FIFA suspended the remaining two matches conditionally for one year.

FIFA described Ronaldo’s action as “violent conduct” or a “serious foul” in their official statement. However, the disciplinary committee took into account that Ronaldo had never received a red card in his 225-match international career. This exceptional record led to the conditional suspension of the remaining two matches, which will only come into effect if Ronaldo commits a similar offense within the next year.

Football fans may wonder whether FIFA granted special privileges to the Portuguese superstar. According to FIFA’s disciplinary code, Articles 25 and 27 allow FIFA to partially or fully suspend any sanction. Article 25 permits reduction or cancellation of disciplinary measures, while Article 27 allows suspension of sanctions for 1 to 4 years.

This is not unprecedented. In the 2014 World Cup, French defender Laurent Koscielny was banned for striking Ukraine’s Oleksandr Kucher but FIFA limited his suspension to one match, allowing him to play in the World Cup. Similarly, Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic received a one-match ban in the Iceland playoff but participated in the next match against Cameroon, scoring twice.

Ronaldo’s suspended ban now ensures he can participate in the World Cup, increasing Portugal’s chances and providing a positive chapter in the Portuguese star’s international career.
