Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-term partner, Spanish-Argentine model Georgina Rodríguez, are set to tie the knot this coming Saturday in the Portuguese star’s homeland of Madeira. According to a report by British newspaper The Sun, the couple will formalise their nine-year relationship in a lavish ceremony surrounded by close friends, family, and high-profile guests.
The solemnisation for the 41-year-old Al Nassr forward and 32-year-old Rodríguez is scheduled to take place at the historic cathedral in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Following local tradition, church ceremonies typically commence at 3:00 pm. Afterwards, an exclusive reception for invited guests will be hosted at the prestigious five-star Savoy Palace Hotel, located in the heart of the city.
Initial rumours had suggested that the couple might exchange vows at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra, mainland Portugal. However, those reports were swiftly dismissed when local authorities confirmed the historic site would remain open to the general public throughout the weekend. Attention subsequently turned to Funchal, where preparations are now underway.
In anticipation of the high-profile gathering, venue management has implemented strict privacy measures. Local sources cited by The Sun revealed that guests staying at the Savoy Palace Hotel were notified in advance that two whole floors, alongside several hotel bars, would be temporarily closed to non-attendees throughout Friday and Saturday. The heightened security protocol aims to safeguard VIP attendees and maintain privacy from the media.
Funchal holds profound personal significance for the iconic footballer. Born and raised on the island in humble surroundings, Ronaldo spent his early childhood sharing a single room with his siblings before moving to Lisbon at the age of 11 to join the Sporting CP academy. Today, despite his status as one of the world’s highest-earning athletes, his connection to Funchal remains strong; the city features a bronze statue built in his honour alongside a luxury hotel bearing his brand. Returning to his birthplace to celebrate his wedding reflects a deep emotional bond with his roots.
The couple’s romance began in 2016 when they met at a luxury fashion boutique in Madrid where Rodríguez was working as a sales assistant. Their relationship grew over the years, leading to Ronaldo proposing last August. Speculation regarding an imminent wedding intensified recently after both were spotted wearing matching diamond rings while boarding a yacht in Majorca, Spain. Having previously hinted at marrying after the conclusion of his international tournament duties, Ronaldo is now preparing to start this new chapter following Portugal’s departure from the recent World Cup.
