Curiosity Over Prison Leads to Murder

A disturbing case from Fatullah in Narayanganj has revealed that an 11-year-old boy, Hossain, was brutally murdered by a group of adolescents allegedly driven by a chilling curiosity about prison life. Police say the killing was premeditated and inspired by a desire among the accused to experience what it feels like to be jailed.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday (27 April), Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman Munshi confirmed the details of the investigation and the arrests made so far.

According to police, the victim, Hossain, used to sell flowers on the streets of the city alongside his father. He went missing on 18 April in the morning, prompting his family to file a general diary. Days later, his body was recovered from an abandoned house near Fatullah Railway Station on 24 April, triggering a full-scale police investigation.

Investigators revealed that a group of teenagers who regularly gathered at the abandoned building were involved in substance abuse and informal gatherings. Among them were Saiful, Tanvir, and Yunus, who reportedly discussed the idea of committing a murder purely out of curiosity about incarceration. They allegedly believed that killing someone would allow them to experience prison life firsthand.

Police say the group later targeted Hossain, who was passing by the area. He was lured with the offer of smoking cannabis and taken to the abandoned house, where three others—Rahat, Hossain (another accused sharing the victim’s name), and Omar—were already waiting. All six allegedly took part in the attack, stabbing the boy to death before abandoning his body at the scene and fleeing.

Following the recovery of the body, police arrested the first suspect, Yasin, on 25 April. Based on his information, five more minors were subsequently detained. Yasin later gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Authorities also recovered the knife believed to have been used in the killing.

One suspect remains at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. Police have confirmed that a total of six individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder, with four named directly in the initial case report and two identified during investigation.

Details of the accused

Name Status Alleged role in incident
Yasin Arrested, confessed Initial planner, gave statement under Section 164
Saiful Arrested Alleged co-planner
Tanvir Arrested Alleged co-planner
Yunus Arrested Alleged co-planner
Rahat Arrested Alleged participant at scene

Authorities have described the incident as exceptionally brutal and deeply concerning, particularly given the age of both victim and accused, and the apparent influence of substance abuse and peer pressure in the crime. Investigations are continuing.
