Police have recovered the highly decomposed body of an unidentified teenage boy from a water-logged pond inside an abandoned residential property in Monohorganj upazila of Comilla district. The gruesome discovery has triggered widespread shock and concern throughout the locality, drawing a crowd of anxious residents and sparking fears linked to a previous missing person case reported in the region.
The grim find occurred late on Saturday night at approximately 10:00 PM within the northern precinct of Binayghor village under Natherpetua union. According to local accounts and law enforcement reports, a group of local labourers had been hired earlier that afternoon to cut down trees on the neglected premises. While hauling timber away from the edge of the overgrown pond at the conclusion of their shift, the workers noticed a foul, pungent odour drifting across the property. Upon investigating the source, they spotted a badly bloated and decomposed human corpse trapped beneath a thick layer of water hyacinths.
Local villagers immediately alerted the authorities, prompting police units from both Monohorganj and Nangalkot police stations to rush to the secluded scene. Officers secured the perimeter, conducted preliminary investigative formalities, and prepared an initial inquest report before dispatching the remains early Sunday morning to the Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
News of the recovery quickly spread to neighbouring areas, prompting relatives of a teenager who went missing roughly six weeks earlier to hurry to the scene. Inspecting the tattered garments clinging to the decomposed remains, family members tentatively identified the body as belonging to their missing kin. Grandfather Mushfiqur Rahman Mansur claimed that the victim matched his fifteen-year-old grandson, Arman Hossain, whose ancestral home is in Sylhet. The teenager had been residing at his maternal grandparents’ home while operating a battery-powered passenger three-wheeler to earn a living, disappearing along with his vehicle nearly forty-six days prior from the Nangalkot area.
Nangalkot Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Islam confirmed that an abduction case had been registered following Arman’s disappearance, which subsequently led to the arrest of three suspects currently facing legal proceedings. However, police authorities emphasised that it remains premature to definitively establish whether the recovered body belongs to the missing auto-rickshaw driver without scientific verification.
Monohorganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Maksud Ahmed noted that investigators suspect the body remained submerged beneath the dense aquatic weeds for over a month, causing severe structural degradation. To ensure absolute accuracy in identification, formal applications for DNA profiling have been submitted alongside forensic procedures. Meanwhile, Laksam Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Sanat Barua personally inspected the crime scene, confirming that preparations are underway to file a murder case at the Monohorganj police station as detectives deepen their inquiries to unravel the mystery surrounding the death.
