Dengue Death Toll Reaches Six at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital

A 14-year-old boy has died while undergoing treatment for dengue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, taking the number of dengue-related deaths at the facility this year to six. The latest death comes as the hospital continues to see a steady rise in dengue cases, with 44 patients currently receiving treatment.

The boy, identified as Rifat, was a resident of Muktagachha upazila in Mymensingh and the son of Zainuddin. He was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at around 9.30pm on 27 July after falling ill with dengue. Despite receiving treatment, his condition deteriorated and he died at approximately 6.30am on Wednesday, 29 July.

Doctors at the hospital initially suspect that he died from dengue shock syndrome, a severe complication of dengue that can develop when significant fluid leakage causes a dangerous fall in blood pressure and disrupts the body’s circulation. Such cases require rapid medical intervention and close monitoring.

According to the hospital’s dengue summary, 19 new dengue patients were admitted during the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning. During the same period, 14 patients recovered sufficiently to leave the hospital, while one patient died.

The hospital currently has 44 dengue patients under treatment. Of them, 31 are men, 12 are women and one is a child. All are being treated in the hospital’s designated dengue ward.

Hospital records show that 456 dengue patients have been admitted to the facility since the beginning of 2026. Six of those patients have died, indicating that the hospital is continuing to face a significant burden of dengue cases as the number of admissions rises.

The increase in cases has placed greater attention on the hospital’s capacity to manage dengue patients, particularly those who develop severe symptoms. Dengue can range from a mild febrile illness to life-threatening complications, with patients requiring careful observation for warning signs such as persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, bleeding, breathing difficulties and sudden weakness.

Hospital officials said the situation is being monitored closely despite the growing number of patients. The dengue ward is currently providing treatment to those admitted, while authorities are prepared to expand separate dengue care facilities if the patient load increases further.

The latest death also highlights the continuing risks posed by dengue, particularly when patients develop severe complications. Health specialists generally advise people with suspected dengue to seek medical attention promptly and to remain alert during the critical phase of the illness, when a patient’s condition can deteriorate rapidly.

With 19 new admissions recorded in just one day, the hospital’s latest figures suggest that dengue remains an active public health concern in Mymensingh. Medical authorities are therefore keeping a close watch on the trend in admissions and the availability of treatment facilities as the number of patients continues to fluctuate.
