Dhaka Police Arrest 506 in 24-Hour Drive

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 506 people during regular operations across the capital over a 24-hour period, while 55 cases were filed during the same period.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Niaz Mehedi, disclosed the information on Thursday, 20 August.

According to the police, the arrests were made during operations conducted in different police station areas across Dhaka. Officers also recovered weapons, narcotics, suspected stolen property and other items during the drive. Legal proceedings against those arrested are currently under way.

The highest number of arrests was recorded in the Mirpur division, where 120 people were detained. Gulshan division followed with 93 arrests, while 65 people were arrested in Wari.

Uttara division recorded 63 arrests, while Lalbagh and Motijheel divisions accounted for 45 and 47 arrests respectively. Police arrested 41 people in Tejgaon, 25 in Ramna and seven through the Detective Branch.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of two switchgear knives, 27.51 kilograms of cannabis, 231 yaba tablets and five grams of heroin.

Police also seized an Ena bus, a truck, 17 motorcycles and eight mobile phones during the operations. In addition, officers recovered 597.73 grams of gold ornaments and Tk 267,000 in suspected stolen money.

A further four bhori, 15 ana and five rati of suspected stolen gold ornaments were recovered. Police also rescued two victims during the drive.

The figures reflect a broad enforcement operation covering several of Dhaka’s major police divisions as well as the Detective Branch. The arrests and seizures involved a range of alleged offences, including possession of narcotics, suspected theft and the carrying of prohibited weapons.

The DMP regularly conducts such operations across the capital as part of its efforts to prevent crime and maintain public order. Police typically intensify searches and enforcement activities in different areas based on information about alleged criminal activity and ongoing investigations.

However, an arrest itself does not establish guilt. The allegations against the detained individuals will be dealt with through the relevant legal process, with courts ultimately determining liability where cases proceed to trial.

The DMP said legal action against those arrested in the latest operation is in progress.
