Diplomatic Language Sparks Debate Over Foreign Ministry Statement

A senior Bangladeshi journalist and former diplomatic correspondent has criticised the language used in a recent statement issued by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arguing that while the government’s protest was justified, the wording failed to reflect internationally accepted diplomatic standards.

Reacting to reports concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s appearance at a press conference held on Indian soil, veteran journalist Anis Alamgir said Bangladesh had every reason to communicate its concerns to India through official channels. However, he questioned whether the tone and vocabulary adopted in the ministry’s public statement were appropriate for a formal diplomatic communication.

In a post on social media, Alamgir wrote that expressing Bangladesh’s objection to developments involving a neighbouring country was both necessary and legitimate. His criticism, he stressed, was not directed at the government’s decision to protest, but at the manner in which that protest was articulated.

Referring to the statement published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official Facebook page, Alamgir pointed out that the post had reportedly been edited at least eight times after publication. He also noted the large number of “Haha” reactions it received on the platform, arguing that such public responses to an official government statement raise questions about both its presentation and its perceived professionalism.

The former diplomatic reporter expressed particular concern over several phrases used in the statement, including “Mafia enterprise”, “Henchmen”, “Venomous vitriol” and “Criminal cohort”. According to him, such expressions resemble the rhetoric commonly heard in political speeches rather than the carefully measured language typically employed in diplomatic correspondence.

He argued that official statements issued by a foreign ministry should be grounded in legal reasoning, institutional discipline and diplomatic restraint, particularly when addressing neighbouring countries or the wider international community. In his view, the credibility of a country’s diplomatic position depends not only on the substance of its message but also on the tone in which it is delivered.

Alamgir also questioned the broader role of the foreign ministry, asking whether its responsibility was to safeguard national interests through calm, professional diplomacy or to issue statements resembling partisan political commentary.

One of his strongest criticisms centred on the statement’s description of the matter as an “Affront to the sovereignty of Bangladesh”. He argued that allegations implying an infringement of another state’s respect for sovereignty are among the most serious matters in diplomacy and are generally communicated through formal diplomatic mechanisms, such as a Note Verbale or confidential bilateral discussions, rather than through a public press statement.

According to Alamgir, publicly framing the issue in such strong terms may reduce diplomatic flexibility and leave less room for constructive engagement between the two neighbouring countries. Diplomatic practice, he suggested, often relies on preserving space for negotiation while firmly conveying official concerns.

He also criticised the inclusion of politically charged expressions such as “Dark days of fascism” and “Client State”, saying such language reflects domestic political narratives rather than the neutral and institutional style expected in foreign policy communications. In his assessment, incorporating partisan terminology into official diplomatic messaging risks weakening the professionalism and credibility of the state’s position abroad.

Concluding his remarks, Alamgir emphasised that excessive emotional expression or highly confrontational rhetoric can diminish the legal and political weight of a country’s claims on the international stage. He argued that diplomacy is most effective when it combines firmness with restraint, allowing governments to defend national interests while maintaining the credibility and seriousness expected in international relations.
