Police have recovered the severed head and two detached hands of an unidentified woman from the Madertek area in Dhaka’s Sabujbagh on Thursday morning, prompting an intensive investigation to establish her identity and determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
According to police, local residents alerted officers after spotting suspicious remains near a canal in the Baganbari culvert area of Madertek at around 9:00 am. Responding to the report, a team from Sabujbagh Police Station arrived at the scene and discovered the body parts discarded inside a polythene bag amid a pile of rubbish along the canal bank.
Sub-Inspector Nure Alam Siddique of Sabujbagh Police Station said the recovered remains consisted of the woman’s severed head and two hands that had been detached from her body. The victim’s identity has not yet been established.
Following the discovery, members of the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Crime Scene Investigation Unit visited the location to collect forensic evidence. Specialists examined the scene and took fingerprints from the recovered remains in an effort to identify the victim through available records. Investigators are also documenting other physical evidence that may assist in tracing those responsible for the crime.
The recovered body parts have since been sent to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College for a post-mortem examination. The forensic examination is expected to help determine the cause of death, the nature of the injuries, and whether the victim was killed at the location where the remains were found or elsewhere before being transported and abandoned.
Police said efforts are continuing to recover the remaining parts of the woman’s body from the surrounding area. Search operations have been launched in and around the canal, while investigators are examining nearby locations for potential evidence, including any items that may have been discarded along with the remains.
The gruesome discovery has shocked residents of the neighbourhood, many of whom gathered near the scene as police conducted their investigation. Law enforcement officials have not yet disclosed whether they suspect the killing was linked to a personal dispute, organised criminal activity, or another motive, saying it would be premature to draw conclusions before forensic and investigative findings are available.
Authorities are now working to identify the victim as a priority, believing that establishing her identity will be crucial in reconstructing the events leading to the killing and bringing those responsible to justice. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have said further details will be released as new evidence emerges.
