The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested 428 people during a special operation conducted across different areas of the capital. Police also seized drugs, sharp weapons and other items during the operation, while 79 cases were filed in connection with various incidents.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Friday (2 October) and signed by Mohammad Akter Hossain, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division.
According to the DMP, officers from different police stations, along with members of intelligence and specialised units, took part in the operation. Mirpur recorded the highest number of arrests, with 118 people taken into custody.
Tejgaon followed with 62 arrests, while 46 people were arrested in the Wari division. Police also arrested 42 people in Ramna and 41 in Lalbagh.
In other areas, 39 people were arrested in Motijheel, 38 in Uttara and 36 in Gulshan. Five people were arrested by the Detective Branch (DB), while one person was arrested by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of several types of drugs and other materials. Police recovered 386 yaba tablets and 7kg 960g of cannabis. Two switchgear knives, two motorcycles, five mobile phones, one solid-state drive (SSD) card and one laptop were also seized.
The DMP said a total of 79 cases had been filed in connection with the operation. Legal proceedings against those arrested were under way at the respective police stations, according to the statement.
The operation involved several units of the metropolitan police and formed part of the DMP’s wider law-enforcement activities in the capital. Such operations cover a range of concerns, including drug-related offences, the possession of sharp weapons and the recovery of suspected illegal property.
However, the police statement did not provide individual details of the allegations against each of the 428 people arrested. It also did not specify how many arrests were linked to each of the 79 cases.
The seized items have been taken into police custody as the relevant legal procedures continue. Further action against the arrested individuals will be determined through the applicable legal process, the DMP said.
