Police recovered 334 rounds of ammunition from a drain beside the boundary wall of Bogura Zilla School during excavation work for a drainage project on Sunday.
The ammunition was found at around 11am on 30 August, when workers were digging the area as part of the construction of a master drainage system undertaken by the Bogura City Corporation.
According to police and local sources, workers had been carrying out excavation work near the drain in the morning. During the operation, one of the workers noticed a metallic object buried beneath the soil on the southern side of the drain wall. He informed his colleagues, who subsequently alerted the police.
Police officers later arrived at the site and began searching the area. After removing soil from the spot, they recovered a total of 334 rounds of ammunition.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali said the ammunition was discovered while workers were excavating the ground for the drainage project. He confirmed that 334 rounds had been recovered from the site.
The origin and age of the ammunition have not yet been established. Police are examining whether the rounds could date back to the Liberation War or whether they may have been among ammunition looted from a police station during the July mass uprising in 2024.
Ibrahim Ali said the matter would be clarified after the ammunition is examined. He added that further details would be provided later through the appropriate senior authorities.
The discovery has prompted police to preserve the recovered ammunition for examination and further investigation. Authorities are expected to determine its type, condition and possible origin before reaching any conclusion about how it came to be buried beneath the drain.
The recovery took place while work was under way on the city’s master drainage infrastructure. Such excavation projects can sometimes expose previously buried objects, making proper assessment necessary when workers encounter unidentified metal or potentially hazardous materials.
Police have not yet disclosed whether anyone has been detained or whether the recovered ammunition is connected to any specific incident. The investigation into its origin remains ongoing.
