ED Summons Nusrat Jahan Over Wheat Smuggling Probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), India’s primary agency for investigating financial crimes, has issued a fresh summons to Tollywood actress and politician Nusrat Jahan. This development is linked to the ongoing investigation into the ration distribution scam in West Bengal. The summons requires her appearance on 22 April, notably just one day before the first phase of the West Bengal Lok Sabha elections scheduled for 23 April.

Background of the Investigation

According to agency sources, Jahan’s name surfaced during the interrogation of suspects and the analysis of documents related to the ration corruption case. The investigation focuses on a specific period when allegations of wheat smuggling to Bangladesh were prevalent. At that time, Nusrat Jahan served as the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Basirhat constituency, a region situated along the border.

The ED is currently scrutinising whether any illegal financial transactions occurred involving the actress during this period. The probe aims to determine if proceeds from the alleged smuggling operations were laundered or redirected through entities associated with her.

Dispute Over Summon Location

There has been significant ambiguity regarding the venue for the interrogation. While the ED initially directed Jahan to appear at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata, reports suggest a potential change in location.

  • Initial Directive: Appearance at the Kolkata ED regional office on 22 April.

  • Requested Venue: Sources indicate that Nusrat Jahan submitted a special request to the agency, seeking to appear at the ED headquarters in New Delhi instead of Kolkata.

Case Profile: Nusrat Jahan under ED Scrutiny

Category Details
Investigating Agency Enforcement Directorate (ED)
Primary Allegation Financial irregularities in Ration/Wheat Smuggling
Summon Date 22 April
Relevant Constituency Basirhat (West Bengal)
Previous Investigations Residential flat financial scam (7-Senes Co.)
Current Status Abroad on personal holiday

Previous Legal Encounters

This is not the first instance where the actress has faced scrutiny from federal investigators. Previously, the ED summoned her in connection with a high-profile real estate fraud case. In that instance, she was accused of being involved with a company that allegedly defrauded senior citizens by promising them affordable residential flats in New Town, Kolkata, which were never delivered.

Current Context and Silence

At the time of the summons, Nusrat Jahan is reportedly vacationing abroad with her partner, actor Yash Dasgupta. Despite the gravity of the allegations and the timing of the summons coinciding with the electoral cycle, the actress has not yet issued an official response or public statement regarding the matter.

The ration corruption case has already seen the arrest of high-ranking officials and ministers in West Bengal. The inclusion of the wheat smuggling angle introduces a cross-border dimension to the financial probe, placing greater emphasis on the role of administrative and political representatives in border constituencies like Basirhat. The agency continues to verify the trail of funds to establish if there is a direct link between the actress and the alleged smuggling syndicate.
