Police in Chuadanga’s Jibannagar upazila have taken eight individuals into custody, amongst them prominent figures from the local Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, following a series of coordinated nighttime raids across the sub-district.
The operations, conducted by multiple police teams between 1:00 am and 5:00 am on Monday, targeted several specific locations within the upazila following actionable intelligence. Law enforcement officials confirmed that those detained include Obaidul Islam, 54, a local Awami League politician from Chutiya village, and Sajjad Biswas, 56, a fellow party figure hailing from Balihuda village. Also apprehended was Sajeduzzaman Deep, 24, a leader within the Chhatra League residing in the Mahanagar Uttarpara neighbourhood of Jibannagar town.
The remaining individuals taken into custody during the five-hour operation were identified as Sabbir Hossain, 23, of Monoharpur village, along with Nur Hossain, 42, his brothers Amin Hossain, 55, and Rokon Miah, 45, and Majibar, 42, all originating from Korchadanga village.
Speaking on the security drive, Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sulaiman Sheikh stated that officers acted swiftly upon receiving precise information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects. He further clarified that Obaidul Islam, Sajjad Biswas, and Sajeduzzaman Deep were already wanted in connection with pre-existing cases filed under the Explosive Substances Act at the police station.
Security drives and targeted intelligence-led sweeps of this nature have intensified across various districts in Bangladesh as regional police forces seek to enforce warrant executions and maintain public order. Cases registered under the Explosive Substances Act typically involve serious allegations concerning the unlawful possession, transport, or deployment of volatile materials, prompting high-priority responses from local administration.
Following their arrest, police completed the necessary administrative formalities overnight. All eight suspects were produced before the Chuadanga District Court at approximately 11:30 am on Tuesday to face ongoing legal proceedings. Law enforcement authorities indicated that further investigations into the detentions remain underway.
