The European Union confirmed on Monday that it had reinstated comprehensive sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, following a recent decision by the United Nations to reinstate its overarching measures.
The UN move, taken over the weekend, came after Western powers activated the “snapback” mechanism under the 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The sanctions reintroduced by the 27-member EU bloc include:

Despite the wide-ranging measures, Tehran condemned the reinstatement as “unjustifiable”.
Western leaders emphasised that, despite the sanctions, diplomatic channels remain open.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, stated on Sunday: “The reimposition of sanctions must not be the end of diplomacy.”
The move underscores ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions while signalling that the EU and its allies remain committed to diplomatic engagement alongside pressure measures.
