Expelled Jubo Dal Leader Remanded to Prison Over Banglamotor Extortion and Gunfire

A court in Dhaka has sent Ferdous Ahmed Simon, an expelled leader of the Jubo Dal, to prison following the completion of a four-day remand in connection with an extortion and violent assault case in the capital’s Banglamotor area.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana issued the order on Tuesday afternoon after rejecting a bail application filed by the defence counsel. The development was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the court’s prosecution department, who noted that three co-accused in the same case—identified as Omar (32), Morshed (25), and Md Shawon (25)—were similarly remanded to judicial custody a day earlier after completing three days of police interrogation.

According to police sources and case documents, the incident took place on the evening of 1 October near New Eskaton Road under the Hatirjheel Police Station jurisdiction. The complainant, Md Sohan, was intercepted by the accused around 7:15 pm. Simon, the principal accused, allegedly demanded an extortion payment of 50,000 taka. When Sohan refused to pay, Simon pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the victim’s chest, and attempted to shoot.

When the gun failed to discharge, Simon struck Sohan on the head with the pistol butt while the other suspects joined in the physical assault. Local residents began gathering at the scene, prompting the attackers to flee temporarily. Sohan received initial medical care at a nearby pharmacy. Shortly afterwards, as he was heading for further treatment accompanied by his brother-in-law, Md Moktar Hossain, the gang intercepted them again on motorcycles. When Moktar attempted to intervene, he was beaten as well. During this second confrontation, Simon fired three warning shots into the air to terrorize the onlookers.

Local residents gave chase and managed to corner the suspects, including Simon, as they attempted to escape. Hatirjheel police officers arrived shortly after receiving emergency calls and took the suspects into custody, seizing weapons and vehicles from the site.

In the subsequent remand prayer submitted by Inspector Muhammad Aminul Islam of the Tejgaon Detective Branch, investigators noted that Simon provided critical leads regarding local extortion rings and illegal firearms during his four days in custody. The officer urged the court to keep the accused incarcerated while these disclosures are verified, citing concerns that he might abscond or tamper with evidence if granted bail.
