A disturbing case of violence and extortion has jolted residents of Nazirpur Upazila after a woman and an elderly man were violently stripped and beaten while being filmed. The footage, which later went viral, has brought national attention to the issue of power abuse and unchecked criminality in remote Bangladeshi communities.
The incident occurred in Mitharkul village, where a gang of five allegedly broke into the woman’s home late at night on 6 August. The accused, known for their dominance in the locality, reportedly used a longstanding land dispute as motivation for their actions. According to the complaint filed by the woman’s relative, the gang invaded the property when the woman's husband was absent.
Deliberately misrepresenting the situation as an “illicit affair” between the woman and the visiting man, the attackers allegedly tied them up, stripped them of their clothing and inflicted severe physical abuse. The viral video shows the victims screaming in terror as one of the attackers pins the man down by placing a foot on his chest.
Alongside the physical assault, the perpetrators reportedly demanded a ransom of 10 lakh taka in exchange for keeping the video private. When the victims failed to comply, the attackers allegedly stole a significant amount of gold jewellery and cash before releasing the video on multiple platforms.
The public circulation of the footage has deeply traumatised the victims and their family. The woman and her relatives have since abandoned their home, fearing retaliation and further humiliation. She described the ordeal over the phone: “They ruined my reputation deliberately. This was not an act of anger—this was a planned attempt to destroy my family.”
Locals say the suspects have long operated with impunity, intimidating villagers and using threats to settle disputes. This incident, many believe, is the most extreme manifestation of their behaviour yet. Outrage has grown as the video continues to circulate, with women's rights activists calling the attack a severe violation of human dignity.
Police officials have acknowledged the complaint and stated that an investigation is ongoing. The Officer-in-Charge assured that action will be taken, but local residents remain sceptical until arrests are made.
For now, Mitharkul village remains shaken, with many fearing that such violence will continue unless swift justice is delivered.
