Police in Gazipur have arrested a young man who allegedly posed as a local political leader to abduct, physically assault, and extort money from a local businessman. The suspect was apprehended on Sunday afternoon from the Konabari area following an investigation into a formal written complaint lodged by the victim.
Officers from Konabari Police Station detained the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Nirob, at around 2:00 pm on Sunday, 11 October. The arrest took place near the Palli Bidyut area along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway under Konabari police jurisdiction. Nirob, son of Azim Uddin, hails from the Rajabari neighbourhood within the same region.
According to local residents and business owners, Nirob had been falsely projecting himself as a prominent leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) across Konabari and adjoining areas for quite some time. Using his fabricated political identity to intimidate locals, he recently targeted a 26-year-old local trader named Kamal Hossain.
Allegations detailed in the complaint state that Nirob forcibly abducted Kamal and held him captive while inflicting physical violence upon him. During the ordeal, the suspect demanded 50,000 taka in extortion money from the victim. Following his release from captivity, Kamal approached the authorities on 7 October and submitted an official written complaint at Konabari Police Station detailing the abduction, assault, and extortion attempt.
Taking immediate cognizance of the written grievance, law enforcement officers initiated enquiries to verify the claims before staging a targeted operation to locate and detain the perpetrator.
In response to the incident, local political leaders moved swiftly to distance their organization from the accused. General Secretary of Konabari Thana BNP, Md Babul Hossain, clarified that Nirob holds no portfolio or membership within the party’s local structure. He condemned the misuse of the party’s name to perpetrate criminal activities, stressing that legitimate political affiliations do not endorse or tolerate lawlessness.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Rafiqul Islam of Konabari Police Station confirmed the detention of the suspect. He stated that law enforcement officers are currently completing the necessary legal documentation to formally record the case, after which the suspect will be produced before the court to face prosecution.
