A 46-year-old farmer was stabbed to death in Kalia Upazila, Narail, after attempting to confront a local youth over drug abuse, police and local sources confirmed on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Mansur Mollya, a resident of Kadamtala village under Peroli Union. Another local resident, Nur Islam, sustained injuries during the same altercation.
The violent incident unfolded late on Saturday night, around 10:00 pm, at the Kadamtala Tri-junction area. According to law enforcement officers, the root of the confrontation stemmed from an argument the previous day. On Friday, Kased Mollya, an elected member of Ward No. 4 of Peroli Union, had reportedly admonished a 20-year-old relative, Hasib Mollya, for abusing narcotics in the vicinity. The confrontation quickly escalated into a verbal row and physical scuffle, leaving tensions high within the community.
On Saturday evening, when Hasib arrived at the local junction, Mansur—who was a cousin of the Union Parishad member—and Nur Islam approached him to enquire about the previous day’s altercation. What began as a verbal exchange rapidly turned lethal when Hasib allegedly drew a sharp weapon and launched an unprovoked attack, stabbing both men repeatedly.
Bystanders rushed the severely wounded victims towards medical assistance. However, Mansur succumbed to his injuries in the Jamrildanga area whilst being transported to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Nur Islam received primary medical care for his injuries.
Detailing the prelude to the tragedy, Union Parishad member Kased Mollya stated that Hasib had been struggling with substance abuse for an extended period. He noted that his attempts to deter the youth from taking drugs had provoked intense anger, culminating in the assault on his person and the subsequent deadly stabbing of his relatives.
Officers from Kalia Police Station dispatched a team to restore order shortly after receiving reports of the tragedy. The Officer-in-Charge, Md. Idrish Ali, confirmed that Mansur’s body has been sent to Narail District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police operations are currently underway to track down and apprehend the suspect, who fled the scene immediately following the assault.
