Father Accused of Killing Infant in Chattogram

A tragic incident has been reported in the Hathazari Upazila of Chattogram, where a two-month-old girl was allegedly murdered by her father. The victim, identified as Saprina Jannat Mahira, was reportedly thrown onto the ground by her father, Osman Gani, resulting in her death. Sub-Inspector Habib of the Hathazari Model Police Station confirmed the veracity of the incident on Tuesday, 14 April, at approximately 2:00 pm.

The event transpired on Tuesday morning within the jurisdiction of Ward No. 9 of Mirzapur Union, specifically at the residence of Ibrahim Member in Charia Muradpur village. Saprina Jannat Mahira was the daughter of Osman Gani, a professional painter, and his wife, Sumaiya Akter.

According to police reports and local testimonies, the incident occurred between 8:30 am and 9:00 am. Osman Gani requested his wife, Sumaiya, to prepare tea while she was holding their infant daughter. For reasons currently under investigation, Gani forcibly snatched the child from her mother’s arms and proceeded to slam the infant onto the floor twice in rapid succession. The child sustained critical injuries during the assault.

Family members immediately intervened and transported the infant to the emergency department of the Hathazari Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival, the duty physician examined the child and officially pronounced her dead. Following the act, the accused, Osman Gani, fled the scene to evade capture.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Upon receiving notification of the crime, high-ranking officials, including the Additional Superintendent of Police for the Hathazari Circle, Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari Model Police Station, Md. Zahidur Rahman, visited the site of the occurrence to oversee the initial investigation.

The police have completed the inquest report (Surathal) of the deceased. The body has since been transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for a formal post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

OC Md. Zahidur Rahman stated that the process of filing a formal murder case is currently underway. Furthermore, the police have detained the victim’s uncle, Roman, for questioning regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
