FIFA Hands Argentina Severe Sanctions Over Post-Final Brawls and Banner

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has imposed severe sanctions on the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several prominent national team figures following violent altercations at the close of last month’s World Cup final against Spain, as well as a contentious political display after their semi-final victory over England.

The disciplinary body handed its heaviest punishment to midfielder Leandro Paredes, who received a 10-match suspension and a fine of $90,000. Full-back Nahuel Molina was issued a seven-match ban alongside a matching $90,000 penalty. Forward Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match suspension and a $30,000 financial penalty. Spanish midfielder Gavi was also sanctioned for his role in the post-final fracas, receiving a one-match ban and a $30,000 fine.

Beyond the pitch-side brawls, the world governing body penalised Argentina for displaying a controversial political banner following their semi-final triumph over England. Argentine players were seen holding a banner bearing the slogan “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, asserting sovereignty over the British Overseas Territory known as the Falkland Islands.

The banner and broader fan misconduct across the tournament resulted in aggregate fines of $321,000 against the AFA. This figure includes $10,000 specifically for displaying the unsanctioned political banner, $20,000 for disorderly supporter behaviour, and the remainder for repeated breaches of FIFA’s anti-discrimination regulations. In addition to the monetary penalties, Argentina must operate their next home fixture under a 50 per cent stadium capacity restriction. A second match carrying an identical 50 per cent capacity reduction has been suspended, while $100,000 of the total fine remains conditional.

The Falkland Islands remain an internally self-governing British Overseas Territory. In a 2013 referendum, islanders voted almost unanimously—by a margin of 99.8 per cent—to retain their political status under the British Crown. Tensions over the territory date back centuries, culminating in April 1982 when Argentine forces invaded the islands, prompting a British task force to reclaim them before Argentine troops surrendered in June of that year.

The banner incident drew swift diplomatic rebukes in Westminster. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on football authorities to ban the players involved, while Peter Kyle, then serving as Shadow Business Secretary, condemned the display as entirely inappropriate for an international sporting arena.

The AFA has instructed its legal team to request the full written grounds of the rulings before submitting formal appeals to FIFA’s Appeal Committee. Argentine football officials have indicated they are prepared to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne should the internal appeals fail. The federations have also designated 15 July—the anniversary of their semi-final win over England—as their annual “National Football Team Day”.
