FIFA Investigates Argentina Following World Cup Final Scuffles

FIFA has opened formal disciplinary proceedings following widespread scuffles between Spanish and Argentine players and coaching staff at the end of the World Cup final. The governing body’s investigation leaves several high-profile Argentine figures facing potential long-term suspensions and disciplinary sanctions.

Spain secured their second World Cup title on Sunday night with a 1-0 victory over Argentina at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States. The deciding goal arrived in the 106th minute of extra time through a strike from forward Ferran Torres. However, the sporting achievement was swiftly overshadowed by chaotic scenes on the pitch immediately after the final whistle.

Tempers flared across the field as full-time was signaled. Right-back Nahuel Molina was seen charging towards Spanish captain Rodri, striking him in the abdomen. Simultaneously, another altercation broke out near the centre circle, where Leandro Paredes grabbed Eric García by the throat before forcefully shoving Gavi to the turf.

The confrontation extended beyond the playing staff to the technical area. Argentine assistant coach Roberto Ayala was captured on camera attempting to punch Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo, though García intervened to ward off the blow.

Match referee Slavko Vinčić struggled to restore order amidst the chaos, issuing a direct red card to Paredes for his violent conduct. The officer will examine the untoward incidents occurring at the conclusion of the match alongside potential breaches of discipline.”

While FIFA’s release refrained from naming individual squad members, heavy sanctions against key figures such as Paredes, Molina, and Ayala remain highly anticipated.

In addition to the post-match brawl, FIFA’s disciplinary unit is examining Argentina’s conduct during their semi-final victory over England. Following that fixture, squad members celebrated in front of supporters whilst holding a banner displaying the politically sensitive slogan “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas” (The Falkland Islands are Argentine). FIFA regulations strictly prohibit any political demonstrations or displays by teams and players during official competitions, leaving those involved exposed to further disciplinary measures.
