A fire broke out at an Essential Drugs Company factory in Tongi, Gazipur, on Wednesday morning, leaving two people with burn injuries. Eleven Fire Service units were deployed to tackle the blaze, with emergency crews working to bring the situation under control.
The fire started at around 10.15 am on 14 October at the factory in the area under Tongi West Police Station in Gazipur Metropolitan area. According to police and Fire Service sources, firefighters from the Tongi Fire Service reached the scene after receiving reports of the incident and immediately began efforts to extinguish the flames. As the operation progressed, the response was expanded to 11 units.
The two injured people were rescued from the site and admitted to Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi for treatment. Their identities and medical conditions were not immediately available.
Shaheen Alam, senior station officer at the Tongi Fire Service, confirmed that 11 units were engaged in the firefighting operation. He said the teams hoped to bring the blaze under control soon.
The cause of the fire had not been established at the time of reporting. Officials had not provided details about the section of the factory where the flames first appeared, how quickly the fire spread or whether any particular production area had been affected. The extent of damage to the factory building, machinery, equipment and other property also remained unknown.
The immediate priority for firefighters was to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. Industrial fires can put workers at risk and cause substantial damage to buildings and equipment, particularly when flames reach areas used for manufacturing or storage. In pharmaceutical facilities, an incident can also raise concerns about production equipment, stored materials and possible disruption to manufacturing. However, there was no immediate confirmation that production at the Essential Drugs Company facility had been suspended or that medicines or raw materials had been damaged.
The presence of 11 firefighting units underlines the scale of the emergency response. However, officials had not released enough information to determine the full extent of the incident or the measures required to secure the premises.
Further details are awaited on the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage and the condition of the two injured people. An assessment following the firefighting operation should help establish the impact on the factory and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
