In a scene marked by heightened political fervour and mass mobilisation, Tarique Rahman reportedly visited the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) central office in Nayapaltan for the first time following his assumption of the post of Prime Minister, according to party accounts. His arrival on Saturday evening drew large crowds of party activists and supporters, creating a highly charged and celebratory atmosphere in the capital.
His motorcade reached the BNP headquarters at approximately 7:23 pm. As the convoy arrived, thousands of party leaders and activists began chanting slogans in unison, welcoming him with visible enthusiasm. Many were seen holding banners, placards, and party flags, while others stood atop road dividers and along both sides of the street to catch a glimpse of the occasion.
Earlier in the evening, at around 6:30 pm, BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who also serves as the Local Government Minister according to party references, entered the headquarters. Shortly after 7:00 pm, Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed also arrived at the party office. These arrivals preceded the much-anticipated visit of Mr Rahman, further intensifying the gathering atmosphere.
Upon reaching the premises, Tarique Rahman stood at the door of his vehicle, waving to the assembled crowd in acknowledgement of their greetings. He was then escorted into the party headquarters, where he is reported to have held brief interactions with senior party leaders.
From the afternoon onwards, the entire Nayapaltan area, stretching from the Nightingale intersection in Purana Paltan to the BNP office, became densely crowded. Supporters from the party’s affiliated wings, including the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal, were seen actively participating in the gathering. The atmosphere was described by witnesses as festive, with continuous chanting of slogans such as welcoming greetings for the Prime Minister and expressions of solidarity from student organisations.
However, the mass turnout also led to significant disruption in traffic movement. Vehicles were forced to move slowly along a single lane, resulting in severe congestion across the surrounding roads. Commuters in adjacent areas experienced delays as the crowd extended into key intersections.
Security arrangements were notably tightened in anticipation of the visit. Law enforcement agencies were deployed at strategic points across Nayapaltan, Fakirapool, VIP Road, and Kakrail. Security personnel maintained strict vigilance, regulating movement and monitoring the dense gathering to ensure order throughout the event.
A female party activist, expressing emotional sentiment, remarked that the current political environment marks a stark contrast to previous years, when, according to her, activists faced restrictions and arrests while attempting to gather in the area. She described the present moment as one of relief and renewed possibility.
