In a move to curb illicit fuel hoarding, maintain orderly distribution, and ensure uninterrupted supply, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed across 19 key fuel depots nationwide.
A statement issued today, Saturday 28 March, by the BGB headquarters and signed by Public Relations Officer Md. Shariful Islam, highlighted that the deployment comes in response to rising global oil prices and supply shortages following ongoing crises in the Middle East. These circumstances, officials noted, have led to an increase in unauthorised attempts to stockpile fuel domestically. Acting under directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the BGB’s mission is to prevent hoarding, regulate distribution, and secure continuous supply.
The operation is structured under a meticulously planned framework overseen by the BGB headquarters. To facilitate efficient duty in locations distant from unit headquarters, temporary base camps have been established near the depots. Personnel stationed at these bases are led by designated officers and are responsible for routine supervision, administrative management, and strict enforcement of security protocols.
| District | Number of Depots | Temporary Base Camps |
|---|---|---|
| Dhaka | 1 | 1 |
| Kurigram | 2 | 2 |
| Rangpur | 3 | 3 |
| Rajshahi | 3 | 3 |
| Sylhet | 2 | 2 |
| Moulvibazar | 3 | 3 |
| Comilla | 3 | 3 |
| Brahmanbaria | 1 | 1 |
| Sunamganj | 1 | 1 |
| Total | 19 | 19 |
BGB personnel are actively conducting intelligence-led monitoring to detect and prevent illegal stockpiling and unauthorised sales. They are empowered to take immediate and effective measures against any disruptive or suspicious activities. Coordination with depot authorities ensures swift information exchange, while visible BGB presence reassures the public and guarantees normal fuel distribution.
In addition to depot security, the BGB has strengthened border operations to stop fuel smuggling. Measures include intensified patrolling, enhanced naval surveillance, establishment of checkpoints, and expanded intelligence gathering in border areas. Special attention is being paid to trucks, lorries, and other vehicles used for import and export, with regular inspections at nearby ICPs and LCPs.
Through these coordinated efforts, the BGB is maintaining fuel supply integrity, preventing illegal activities, and reinforcing public confidence in the energy distribution system. This nationwide deployment underscores the government’s commitment to energy security and law enforcement in the current challenging global market.
