Five Suspected Robbers Arrested in Kawran Bazar Operations

Officers from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested five individuals suspected of plotting muggings and armed robberies in the capital’s commercial hub of Kawran Bazar.

Police identified the detainees as Rayhan, 20, Md Noor Alam, 25, Md Hridoy, 26, Md Mehedi Hasan, 38, and Md Jewel, 30.

The targeted operation took place at around midnight on Tuesday, 21 July, within the jurisdiction of Tejgaon Police Station.

According to official reports from the CTTC’s Transnational Crime Division, intelligence officers received a specific tip-off indicating that an organized criminal group had assembled near an alleyway in Kawran Bazar. The suspects were reportedly armed and laying the groundwork to ambush late-night commuters, rickshaw passengers, and wholesale traders operating in the market area. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a specialized police team moved into the site and established a perimeter. Sensing the approaching law enforcement officers, the individuals attempted to flee the scene on foot, but officers successfully subdued and apprehended all five men.

Kawran Bazar serves as the largest and most active wholesale agricultural market hub in Dhaka. Every night, hundreds of goods-laden lorries and trucks arrive from various districts across the country, drawing thousands of traders, porters, and buyers during the early hours. Taking advantage of the constant movement and poorly lit side streets, opportunistic criminal gangs often target unsuspecting citizens to rob them of cash, mobile phones, and valuable personal belongings at knifepoint.

During preliminary questioning, police gathered details regarding the operational patterns of the detained group. Investigators revealed that the suspects had been active across key spots in Kawran Bazar and the adjacent Tejgaon industrial area, specifically targeting individuals during late-night and early-morning shifts when foot traffic thins out.

Following their apprehension at the crime scene, CTTC officers handed the suspects over to Tejgaon Police Station for formal processing. A case was registered under the relevant sections of the law, and all five detainees were produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday. Police officials confirmed that nighttime patrols and intelligence surveillance across major commercial districts remain heightened to prevent street crime and protect citizens.
