Former Awami League Leader Arrested in Gazipur

Police in Gazipur have arrested Rafiqul Islam Mondal Bulbul, the former president of the Sreepur Pourashava Awami League and ex-vice chairman of the Sreepur Upazila Parishad. The arrest was executed on Thursday night in connection with multiple murder cases filed during the recent anti-discrimination student movement that swept across Bangladesh.

The operation took place at approximately 9:00 pm on 6 August in the Bhanganhati village area of Sreepur Municipality. Officers acting on specific intelligence successfully apprehended the 52-year-old politician from his home village. Bulbul, the son of the late Hazrat Ali Mondal, is a prominent local political figure who served in significant administrative and party roles within the district.

Confirming the operation, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station, Mohammad Shahinur Alam, stated that the raid was carried out following credible information regarding the accused’s location. According to police records, Bulbul was a named suspect in several FIRs (First Information Reports) involving violent incidents and fatalities that occurred during the student-led demonstrations. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the arrested leader would be produced before the court on Friday to face formal proceedings.

Contextual Background and Broader Picture

The arrest comes amidst nationwide legal actions against several high-profile political figures and affiliated leaders following the political shifts triggered by the anti-discrimination movement. Gazipur, a major industrial hub adjacent to the capital, Dhaka, was one of the central regions during the unrest, witnessing widespread demonstrations, clashes, and tragic casualties.

In the wake of these events, numerous legal cases, including charges of murder and inciteful violence, have been registered against influential local leaders across various police jurisdictions. Law enforcement agencies have intensified intelligence-led drives to apprehend individuals implicated in these serious offenses, aiming to restore order and ensure judicial accountability for the victims’ families.

Police authorities in Gazipur have re-emphasised their commitment to maintaining public safety and executing pending arrest warrants without bias. Further investigations are currently underway to ascertain Bulbul’s direct involvement in the specific incidents cited in the case dockets before the judicial process unfolds.
