The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested Mizanur Rahman Shahin, a suspect in the high-profile Rafi murder case from Shainpukur area in Dohar upazila of Dhaka, at the country’s main international airport while he was allegedly attempting to flee to Germany.
According to investigators, the arrest was made in the early hours of Wednesday at approximately 4:00 a.m. at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Shahin had reportedly completed travel procedures and was preparing to depart Bangladesh when law enforcement officers intercepted him based on intelligence inputs and ongoing surveillance.
Shahin is identified as the nephew of former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and the son of Azizul Rahman Miraj from the Shainpukur area. Authorities allege that he had been evading arrest for nearly 11 months in connection with a brutal killing that shocked the local community.
Following his detention, Shahin was produced before a Dhaka court later on Wednesday afternoon. The court rejected his bail plea and instead granted a one-day remand for further interrogation, as confirmed by PBI Inspector Md. Jamal Uddin.
PBI sources state that Rafi was murdered on 20 May 2025 in a particularly violent attack in which his tendons were reportedly severed before death. The incident triggered widespread outrage in Dohar and surrounding areas, prompting a rapid police investigation.
Several individuals named in the case, including Shahid, Titu, Hukum Ali, and Al-Amin, have already been arrested and are currently in custody. Another accused, identified as Baten, remains absconding.
Crucially, according to investigators, Al-Amin provided a confessional statement during interrogation, alleging that Shahin had directed or orchestrated the killing. Authorities claim this statement formed a key basis for pursuing Shahin as a primary suspect.
Officials further noted that Shahin had been moving between locations to avoid detection and was ultimately intercepted while attempting to leave the country for Germany via a third destination.
| Time / Date | Event | Location | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 May 2025 | Rafi murder occurs | Shainpukur, Dohar | Victim killed in a violent attack |
| Following months | Multiple arrests made | Various locations | Four suspects detained; one still absconding |
| ~11 months | Shahin in hiding | Unknown locations | Allegedly evading arrest |
| 9 April 2026 (04:00 a.m.) | Shahin arrested | Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport | Detained while attempting to travel to Germany |
| 9 April 2026 (afternoon) | Court appearance | Dhaka | Bail rejected; 1-day remand granted |
The PBI has indicated that Shahin’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case. Inspector Md. Jamal Uddin stated that the delay in publicly disclosing the arrest was due to continued interrogation and procedural requirements following his detention.
Investigators are now focusing on verifying the alleged chain of command behind the killing, including Shahin’s suspected role in directing the operation. Further questioning during remand is expected to clarify the extent of coordination among the accused individuals.
Authorities have also intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitive, Baten, who is believed to be in hiding.
The case continues to draw considerable public attention due to its brutality, the alleged involvement of multiple suspects, and the high-profile familial connection of one of the accused.
