Four Awami League Leaders Detained in Nalchhiti Security Sweep

Police in Nalchhiti have arrested four figures associated with the Awami League and its affiliate organisations, including a local headmaster, during a series of coordinated raids aimed at averting potential disorder surrounding National Mourning Day on 15 August.

The targeted operations took place on Friday afternoon across multiple locations within the upazila under Jhalakathi district. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalchhiti Police Station, Touhiduzzaman Sohag, confirmed the detentions, stating that law enforcement agencies acted swiftly based on intelligence reports indicating potential sabotage and unapproved political demonstrations.

Those taken into custody have been identified as:

• Md. Jalilur Rahman Akon: Headmaster of Nalchhiti Merchant Secondary Girls’ School and Publicity Secretary of Nalchhiti Upazila Awami League.

• Md. Shamsul Alam Mallick: General Secretary of Kulkathi Union Awami League.

• Nazrul Islam Molla: General Secretary of Subidpur Union Krishak League.

• Abdul Malek Molla: General Secretary of Ward No. 2 Awami League in Dapdapia Union.

Following directives issued by Police Headquarters to bolster security and preserve public order nationwide ahead of 15 August, Jhalakathi District Police instructed local stations to intensify intelligence gathering and surveillance. acting on specific leads regarding secret gatherings and potential disruptions, multiple police teams conducted simultaneous raids throughout Subidpur, Kulkathi, Dapdapia, and the Nalchhiti municipal area.

Officers reported that tip-offs suggested preparations were underway to organise sudden processions and stir unrest across key zones in the upazila. The pre-emptive operation was launched immediately to neutralise potential risks to public safety. The detained individuals remain in police custody undergoing interrogation.

Briefing reporters on the situation, OC Touhiduzzaman Sohag emphasised that maintaining tranquility throughout the upazila remains the force’s utmost priority. He reaffirmed that any attempts to instigate violence or breach public peace would be met with strict legal measures. Police have initiated procedural legal action to present the suspects before the court, whilst security personnel have been deployed to strategic intersections and entry points to reassure the local community.
