Four Granted Anticipatory Bail Following Attack on Sirajganj MP’s Convoy

Four key suspects accused of participating in a violent assault on the motorcade of VP Ainul Huq, the Member of Parliament for the Sirajganj-3 constituency (Raiganj-Tarash), have been granted anticipatory bail by a local court.

The developments were confirmed on Monday afternoon by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raiganj Police Station, Md. Ahsanuzzaman. Earlier in the day, the accused surrendered before the Raiganj Cognizance Court in Sirajganj and submitted applications seeking pre-arrest bail. Following a formal hearing on the petitions, the presiding magistrate granted bail to all four individuals.

According to police records provided by the OC, the four individuals who received legal relief include Riyad Sheikh, 35, son of Nasir Uddin from the Rantittha Hajibari area, and Simanta Talukdar, 22, son of Babu Miah from Dhangora village. Both are recognised student leaders associated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The remaining two individuals were identified as Md. Sifat, 20, Joint Member Secretary of the district unit of Chhatra Shakti—the student wing of the National Citizens Committee (NCP)—and Member Secretary of its Raiganj Upazila unit, alongside Zubayer Hossain, 19, son of Muktadir from Dhangora Sadar, who is also active in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The criminal proceedings stem from a high-profile attack that took place on Saturday afternoon at Dhangora Bazar in Raiganj Upazila. MP VP Ainul Huq was travelling through the commercial hub in a motorcade when a group of agitators intercepted his vehicle. The assaulters vandalised the parliamentarian’s car and targeted accompanying vehicles, leaving several people injured in the ensuing commotion.

Following the assault, law enforcement registered a formal case naming 15 identified individuals, alongside an additional 30 to 40 unidentified suspects. Police operations launched immediately after the incident led to the arrest of two key suspects, Golam Muktadir and Alamgir Hossain, who were remanded into judicial custody by the court.

Addressing the status of the investigation, OC Ahsanuzzaman noted that the court has scheduled a hearing for a subsequent date to determine the police’s petition seeking custodial interrogation and police remand for the two incarcerated suspects. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are continuing drive operations to identify and apprehend the remaining absconding suspects linked to the motorcade ambush.
