Four Killed in Bus-Rickshaw Collision in Mirpur

Four people, including two women, were killed when a passenger bus collided head-on with a battery-powered rickshaw in the Mirpur Beribadh area of the capital on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at around 7.30am on 4 November in Nawab-er-Bagh, within the jurisdiction of Shah Ali Police Station in Dhaka. The victims comprised two men and two women. Their identities had not been established immediately after the incident.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, a unit from the Kallyanpur Fire Station was dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving information about the collision. Fire service personnel arrived promptly and took part in the rescue operation.

Talha Bin Jasim, media officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the fatalities. He said four people had died in the accident and that the identities of the victims were not immediately available.

The fire service also confirmed that the bus involved in the collision belonged to Asian University and was being used as the institution’s own transport service. The crash took place on the Mirpur Beribadh road, an area under Shah Ali Police Station.

The accident occurred during the morning hours, when roads in the capital generally begin to experience increased traffic as people travel to workplaces, educational institutions and other destinations. A collision involving a passenger bus and a battery-powered rickshaw can have particularly severe consequences because rickshaws offer considerably less physical protection to their occupants than larger motor vehicles.

Battery-powered rickshaws are widely used for short-distance journeys in Dhaka and other urban areas. Their accessibility and relatively low travel costs make them a common choice for commuters. However, interactions between these smaller vehicles and larger motorised transport remain a concern on busy roads, particularly where different types of vehicles share limited road space.

Road safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the importance of maintaining safe speeds, observing traffic regulations and ensuring greater awareness among drivers to reduce the risk of serious collisions. Proper traffic management and responsible driving are also essential to protecting passengers and other road users.

However, the precise circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s collision had not been established in the initial report. No detailed explanation was immediately available regarding how the bus and rickshaw came into contact or what caused the head-on crash.

The identities of the four victims also remained unknown at the time of the Fire Service’s initial confirmation. Further details about the circumstances of the accident and the victims were awaited from the relevant authorities.
