At least four people have been killed and nine others injured in a shooting at a high school in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, according to local authorities. The incident took place early on Tuesday at Ateneo de Zamboanga High School, shortly before classes were due to begin.
The victims included two students and two security personnel, adding to the shock surrounding an attack at a private school operated by the Jesuit community. The nine injured people were taken for medical attention, although authorities did not immediately release their identities or provide detailed information about the severity of their injuries.
The National Bureau of Investigation is involved in the inquiry, while police and other investigators have remained at the school to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and gather evidence.
According to information provided by police and cited by local media, the suspected attacker is a male fourth-year student at the school. Authorities said he entered the campus carrying a pistol and a rifle before allegedly opening fire inside a classroom. Initial accounts indicate that there was no obvious provocation immediately before the shooting, although investigators have yet to establish what prompted the attack.
Zamboanga City Mayor Khaimar Adan Olaso confirmed that the suspect was a student at the private institution. Local authorities have not yet established a definitive motive, and investigators are expected to examine the suspect’s background, his access to firearms and any possible disputes or circumstances that may have preceded the incident.
The attack occurred at a particularly sensitive time, as students were arriving or preparing for the start of lessons. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show students rushing out of the school building in panic. Gunshots could also be heard in some of the footage. The authenticity and full context of such social media material, however, have not been independently established.
The presence of firearms inside the school is also likely to form a central part of the investigation. Authorities are examining how the suspect was able to enter the campus with a pistol and a rifle and whether existing security procedures were followed. Investigators will also seek to determine whether there were any warning signs or earlier incidents that could have indicated a potential threat.
The deaths of two security personnel and two students have raised immediate questions about the circumstances inside the campus when the shooting began. Security staff are often among the first people to respond when an incident occurs at a school, making their deaths particularly significant to the ongoing investigation.
Police and investigators have secured the school premises as they work to establish a clear sequence of events. Their inquiry is expected to focus on the suspected shooter’s movements, the source of the firearms, the events immediately before the attack and the reason the classroom was targeted.
Authorities have not yet announced a confirmed motive. Further details are expected to emerge as investigators question witnesses, examine evidence from the school and establish a fuller account of how the shooting unfolded.
The incident has left the school community facing the immediate consequences of a violent attack in an educational setting, while investigators continue to determine how the tragedy occurred and whether any failures in campus security contributed to the loss of life.
