1971—a year drenched in blood. A mere fourteen-year-old girl dreamt of building a peaceful home one day, with fields of golden paddy and the simple joys of life. But history led her on a different path, one written with courage, sacrifice, and unyielding patriotism.
Following her commander’s orders, she carried only a banana tree close to her chest. This tree became her shield of courage. Swimming across torrents at night, she reached Pakistani camps—acting as a spy. Though the enemy was near, fear never touched her eyes; only an unbreakable determination for freedom.
To stay hidden, she smeared mud, filth, and even excrement on herself. Her hair, body, and clothes carried the unbearable stench as she roamed around the camp. Everyone thought she was mad. That perception became her strength. The ‘madwoman’ brought back all the secret information of the Pakistani forces—weapon counts, attack plans, which rooms held imprisoned girls and their daily suffering—every piece of intelligence a key to saving countless lives.
Her childhood home had been destroyed, her mother and she made beggars, meals often consisted of boiled taro—but Taraman Bibi became an invaluable ally of the freedom fighters. As a refugee, she got work in a guerrilla camp as a cook. Commander Aziz Master made her his “discipline girl” to ensure she stood by to avenge the dishonour of the nation’s daughters.
Amid washing pots and pans, she took up heavy weapons. The image still lingers in memory—
Amid gunfire, the fourteen-year-old cooked rice;
The next moment, she climbed a tree to count enemy arms;
Another moment, she collected intelligence at the Pakistani camp;
And one day—she held a Sten gun for the country.
A small body with extraordinary strength and a heart full of courage.
Day after day, she conducted reconnaissance across muddy ponds.
Facing the world’s top armed forces, her gun was trained on the target.
It was her hands that fired the bullets. Her hands that shed blood.
Yet she did not stop. Her struggle and bravery continued until the country’s independence.
Have we given her the respect she deserved?
Taraman Bibi—a life defined by sacrifice. A symbol of boundless love for the soil, her mother, and her homeland.
On the first day of the victory month in 2018, freedom fighter Taraman Bibi was enshrined in the heart of independent Bangladesh.
Born in 1957, Rajibpur, Kurigram. But her real birth was in the roar of 1971—born against injustice, born for freedom.
Salute and deep respect, Freedom Fighter Taraman Bibi.
You are the eternal flame of courage, resolve, and sacrifice in our history.
