From Jingle to Journey Anthem

What began as a modest advertising jingle has, over the years, transformed into one of the most evocative musical symbols of Eid homecoming. “Shopno Jabe Bari” first appeared in 2009 in a commercial campaign, composed and arranged by Habib Wahid, with vocals by Milon Mahmud. Its emotional appeal, rooted in the universal longing to return home, quickly struck a chord with listeners.

Seven years later, in 2016, a sequel to the campaign introduced a refreshed version of the song. Once again composed by Habib Wahid, with lyrics by Russell Mahmud, the new rendition featured the voice of Mithun Chakraborty. This second version not only revived the original’s sentiment but elevated it, eventually becoming synonymous with the annual Eid migration, when millions travel from cities back to their ancestral homes.

Every year, as Eid approaches, the song regains remarkable traction across social media, often shared alongside stories of travel, family reunions, and nostalgia. Its continued relevance highlights its deep cultural resonance.

Reflecting on his role in the song, Mithun Chakraborty described the experience as profoundly life-changing. He considers it a defining moment in his career, even referring to it as a “second birth.” Interestingly, he noted that many listeners remain unaware that he is the voice behind the widely celebrated sequel. However, he expressed no regret over this, stating that the song’s popularity itself is the greatest reward.

“For an artist, there is nothing more meaningful than seeing a song become part of people’s lives,” he said. “That acceptance is more valuable than recognition.”

Mithun also revealed that his involvement in the project was unexpected. Initially not selected for the track, he was later chosen by composer Habib Wahid — a decision that ultimately proved pivotal. What he modestly described as a “temporary recording” eventually became a cherished national favourite.

Timeline of the Song’s Evolution

Beyond this iconic piece, Mithun remains deeply engaged in music. He has recently contributed vocals to commercial jingles for financial service campaigns and continues to collaborate with various organisations. He emphasised that such projects, though brief in duration, demand precision and creativity.

An accomplished percussionist, Mithun takes pride in his mastery of rhythm instruments. He describes his body as his primary instrument, reflecting a philosophy that music is not confined to tools but embodied in the artist. While he acknowledges limited expertise in melodic instruments, he continues to explore and develop his skills.

Looking ahead, Mithun is keen to focus more on his identity as a singer. He is currently working on a personal musical initiative titled “Art of Chakra”, which will feature his original compositions. In addition, he hinted at an upcoming playback project for a film expected to release during Eid, though details remain under wraps.

At present, his schedule is filled with diverse engagements. He performs as a drummer alongside fellow musician Iman Chowdhury in a collaborative project known as “Bengal Symphony”. He is also involved in film music and ongoing productions linked to Coke Studio Bangla.

Despite his achievements, Mithun maintains a humble outlook, describing himself simply as a percussionist continuing to learn. His journey illustrates how a single song, when embraced by millions, can redefine an artist’s career and become an enduring part of a nation’s cultural identity.
