Groom Leaves Wedding Without Marrying After Goat Meat Dispute

A wedding in Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura took an unexpected turn on Monday when a Japan-based expatriate groom reportedly left the bride’s home without completing the marriage ceremony after objecting to the absence of goat meat in a traditional wedding dish known locally as khadore.

The incident took place on Monday (17 August) afternoon in Tolatala village of Dharkhar Union in Akhaura upazila. The groom, identified as Junaid, is the son of Abdul Jalil of Niamatpur village in Kasba upazila.

According to local sources, Junaid arrived at the bride’s home to attend the wedding arrangements and was formally welcomed with flowers. However, he reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the flowers used during the reception and made critical remarks in front of people present at the venue.

After the welcoming and gate ceremonies were completed, the groom was taken to the designated area for the next stages of the wedding proceedings. Food was subsequently served to relatives and guests. As part of the arrangements for the groom’s side, a traditional dish known as khadore was served.

It was at this point that the dispute reportedly began.

Junaid noticed that the khadore did not contain goat meat and objected to it. He allegedly told those present that he would not eat the food without goat meat and that he would not proceed with the wedding unless the meat was provided.

Relatives of the bride and others present at the venue reportedly tried to persuade him to reconsider. They attempted to resolve the disagreement and encouraged him to continue with the wedding arrangements. Junaid, however, remained firm in his position.

The disagreement ultimately brought the wedding proceedings to a halt. He left the bride’s home alone without completing the marriage ceremony and returned without getting married.

The bride’s father, Shafik Mia, said he would have arranged goat meat had he been informed about the requirement beforehand.

“I would have made arrangements for goat meat if I had been told earlier. No one informed me about this beforehand,” he said. “Even after the issue arose, relatives and others tried to persuade him, but he did not agree.”

Local Union Parishad member Ashik Mia described the incident as unfortunate. He said families generally make extensive preparations for a daughter’s wedding and do not expect such an incident to disrupt the occasion.

According to him, several people tried to explain the situation to Junaid after the issue over the goat meat emerged, but he remained unwilling to proceed without it.

The incident has since drawn attention locally, particularly because the disagreement over a traditional wedding dish resulted in the groom leaving before the marriage could take place. The account, however, is based on statements from local sources and those involved in the event.
