Agrabad, now widely regarded as the commercial epicentre of Chittagong, traces its origins back to 1665, when the region became part of the Mughal Empire. Historical accounts suggest that a contingent of Mughal soldiers settled permanently in the area. It is believed that one such settler, nostalgic for his birthplace in Agra, named the locality “Agrabad,” a name that has endured through centuries and now represents the city’s bustling commercial district.
Prior to the Partition of India in 1947, Agrabad was little more than a rustic settlement. Crude roads, scattered dwellings, and a sparse population defined its landscape. During the Pakistan era, planned urbanisation transformed Agrabad into a modern urban area. Following Bangladesh’s independence, this development accelerated further. Records indicate that significant planning initiatives began in the 1950s, and by the 1980s, Agrabad had evolved into a fully modernised district, becoming the focal point of Chittagong’s commercial framework. Historian Abdul Haq Chowdhury, in his work Port City Chittagong, describes Agrabad as symbolic of the city’s economic vitality, stating that much of Chittagong’s commercial activity is concentrated here.
Today, Agrabad houses a diverse range of commercial entities, from import-export businesses to multinational headquarters, banks, insurance companies, technology firms, and large retail outlets. The area also accommodates regional offices of Bangladesh’s leading banks, international shipping and logistics companies, and offices in the garment and industrial sectors. This concentration of activity supports the daily livelihood of thousands of workers.
| Sector | Key Institutions | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Banking | 25+ national and regional banks | Financial hub |
| Insurance | Life Insurance and other companies | B2B and B2C operations |
| Multinational Companies | Technology, Trading, Shipping | Regional headquarters |
| Industry & Garments | RMG factories, chemical and parts suppliers | Industrial backbone |
| Hospitality | Four-star Hotel Agrabad | Business events & corporate guests |
Agrabad is bounded by Choumuhani to the north, Barik Building Mor to the south, Mogoltuli and Madarbari to the east, and Halishahar to the west. Key roads including Badamtali Mor, Dhaka Trunk Road, and Sheikh Mujib Road connect it to the wider city, while its proximity to Strand Road and Sadarghat links it directly to the port and trade corridors.
The one-kilometre stretch from Chittagong Port Gate No. 1 to Agrabad Mor encompasses the core commercial district, hosting numerous banks and corporate offices. Historic and institutional landmarks, including the National Ethnological Museum, the municipal corporation offices, and Hotel Agrabad (established in 1969), have elevated property values and transformed the area into a recognised corporate address.
The World Trade Centre, a 21-storey building inaugurated in 2016, houses the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCC&I), an organisation founded in 1906 with over 14,000 member institutions spanning garments, trading, chemicals, machinery, and vehicle imports.
Beyond the commercial zone, Agrabad hosts at least 30 governmental departments, including the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Department of Fisheries, along with ten government colonies, consolidating its role as both a commercial and administrative hub.
Urban experts and real estate analysts highlight Agrabad as one of Chittagong’s most stable and valuable commercial zones, citing land use, building quality, and investment security. However, challenges such as pavement encroachments, insufficient parking, and traffic management need to be addressed to fully modernise the area. Kazi Ainul Haque, Managing Director of Equity Property Management Ltd, emphasises that solving these issues will attract further investment and enhance Agrabad’s status as a true modern commercial centre.
With its rich history, port-driven economy, and decades of planned urbanisation, Agrabad today stands as the indisputable commercial heartbeat of Chittagong.
