Law enforcement authorities have arrested a husband and wife in possession of a substantial quantity of illegal narcotics following a targeted operation in Gopalganj’s Muksudpur upazila. Officials from the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) confirmed that 16 kilograms of cannabis were recovered during the raid, underscoring ongoing concerns about organised drug trafficking in rural Bangladesh.
The arrests took place on Sunday afternoon, 14 December, in the village of Guptargati, an area that had reportedly been under discreet surveillance for some time. Acting on confidential intelligence suggesting an imminent large-scale drug transaction, a specialised DNC team launched a coordinated operation at the residence of the suspected traffickers.
The accused have been identified as Borhan Sheikh, aged 41, and his wife Jamila Begum, aged 34, both permanent residents of Guptargati village. According to officials, the couple had allegedly been involved in the illicit trade of narcotics for an extended period, operating under the radar of local authorities.
Mohammad Nabi Newaz, Assistant Director of the Department of Narcotics Control’s Gopalganj district office, formally confirmed the incident. Speaking to reporters, he stated that the operation was initiated following credible intelligence indicating that a large quantity of drugs was being stored and prepared for distribution from the couple’s home.
“Based on secret information regarding the sale and distribution of a significant amount of narcotics, we conducted a raid in Guptargati village under Muksudpur upazila,” Mr Newaz explained. “During the search of Borhan Sheikh’s residence, our team recovered 16 kilograms of cannabis. The suspects were immediately detained at the scene.”
Following their arrest, the recovered cannabis, along with the detained individuals, was handed over to Muksudpur Police Station. A formal case has since been filed against the couple under the Narcotics Control Act, and further legal proceedings are underway. Authorities have indicated that investigations will continue to determine whether the suspects are linked to a wider drug trafficking network operating in the region.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions to the arrests, with some voicing shock that a seemingly ordinary family was allegedly involved in such criminal activity. Others welcomed the action, stating that drug abuse and trafficking have become an increasing concern in the area, particularly among young people.
Officials reiterated their commitment to combating narcotics-related crime and urged the public to cooperate by providing information about suspicious activities. “Community awareness and support are vital in our fight against drugs,”
