A five-year-old child died after falling into a septic tank at a building site in Rangamati’s Kaptai upazila on Monday afternoon, in a tragic incident that has raised concerns over safety measures at unfinished construction sites.
The deceased was identified as Nandi Mallik, 5, daughter of Sujan Mallik, a resident of Shilchhari Bazar area under Ward No. 5 of Waggya Union in Kaptai. The accident occurred at around 2:30pm when the child was playing near a house and accidentally fell into a septic tank attached to an under-construction building.
According to local residents and police sources, Nandi’s parents were away at their respective workplaces at the time of the incident. The child was staying at home with her grandmother. During playtime, she reportedly moved away from her grandmother’s supervision and fell into the open septic tank without anyone noticing immediately.
Hearing the incident, local people rushed to the spot and launched a rescue effort. They later pulled the child out and took her to Kaptai Upazila Health Complex, where doctors examined her and declared her dead.
The incident has caused grief among residents of the area, with many expressing concern over the risks posed by unguarded construction sites, particularly for children. Safety barriers and proper coverings around open pits, tanks and excavations are considered essential measures to prevent such accidents.
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, a member of Ward No. 5 of Waggya Union Parishad, said the child died after falling into the septic tank of the unfinished building. He added that the tank did not have a cover as it had reportedly been stolen, although there was a fence around the area.
“Despite the presence of fencing, the child accidentally fell into the tank while playing,” he said.
Kaptai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan confirmed the incident and said initial information suggested that the child died after falling into the septic tank while playing.
He added that legal procedures regarding the incident were underway.
The death has once again highlighted the importance of ensuring strict safety standards at construction sites, especially in residential areas where children often move freely. Local authorities and community members have stressed the need for greater awareness and supervision to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
