Global streaming platform Netflix has announced a landmark agreement with FIFA to acquire the live broadcasting rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, signalling a transformative shift in major international sports broadcasting. Under the partnership, the streaming service will air live coverage of all 104 matches of the tournament, which marks the centenary celebration of football’s flagship competition.
The 2030 tournament will feature a unique multi-continental format, hosted jointly by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, alongside special opening commemorative matches taking place in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Netflix subscribers will gain access to complete live coverage of every fixture, from the opening ceremonial matches in South America to the tournament final in Europe.
Beyond live match transmissions, the platform’s coverage will encompass comprehensive studio analysis, pre-match preview shows, daily highlights programmes, and localized shoulder content tailored for regional audiences. Crucially, the agreement includes a public access commitment permitting one match per matchday to be streamed free of charge. In addition, a free-to-air television network in Spain will broadcast both semi-finals, the final, and all matches involving the Spanish national team.
Highlighting the strategic significance of the agreement, Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, emphasized the unparalleled power of the World Cup to unite global audiences. Recalling her experience witnessing Spain’s historic World Cup triumph inside the stadium, she noted how the collective pride, passion, and excitement of football fans form enduring cultural narratives that resonate across generations.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström welcomed the collaboration, describing the 2030 edition as a historic milestone for world football. He expressed confidence in partnering with Netflix to reach millions of supporters across Spain, Andorra, and international markets, reiterating FIFA’s core objective of bringing the sport closer to global fans through modern digital distribution.
