A district court in Sunamganj has sentenced a pharmacist to death for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of an expatriate’s wife inside a medicine shop in Jagannathpur. Judge Muhammad Habibullah of the Sunamganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon following a lengthy judicial proceeding.
The convict, Jitesh Chandra Gop, son of Yadav Chandra Gop and Anita Rani Gop, originally hails from Itna Upazila in Kishoreganj District. Prior to his arrest, he managed and resided at a pharmacy located within a commercial market in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj.
According to court directives, the execution of the capital sentence remains subject to mandatory confirmation from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court through the standard death reference procedure. Pending confirmation, the court ordered that the convict be confined to a condemned cell in prison.
Case records reveal that the victim, Shahnaz Parvin Jyotsna, the wife of an expatriate worker, went missing on 16 February 2022 after visiting the pharmacy to purchase medication. When she failed to return home, concerned relatives launched a search across the locality. On 17 February 2022, police recovered six severed pieces of her body from inside the pharmacy premises.
Following the discovery, the victim’s brother, Helal Ahmad, lodged a murder case at Jagannathpur Police Station against Jitesh Chandra Gop and several unnamed individuals. Investigating officers subsequently completed their probe and submitted a formal charge sheet accusing Jitesh of committing the murder and attempting to conceal the crime.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Mallick Moin Uddin Suhel confirmed the judgment to reporters, expressing satisfaction with the judicial outcome. He stated that the sentence delivers justice to the victim’s family, sets a deterrent precedent against brutal crimes, and reinforces public faith in the country’s judicial system.
