In a significant diplomatic gesture aimed at fortifying regional cooperation, the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially pledged to ensure the safe passage of Bangladeshi-flagged merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This commitment comes amid a complex geopolitical climate in the Middle East and was formalised in a press release issued by the Iranian Embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.

The announcement serves as a cornerstone for bilateral maritime safety, ensuring that one of the world’s most vital energy corridors remains accessible to Bangladeshi trade. Furthermore, Iran highlighted its humanitarian role in the successful repatriation of 186 Bangladeshi nationals, who were safely evacuated from Iranian territory to Azerbaijan during recent regional escalations.

Addressing Misinformation and Media Integrity

A primary focus of the Iranian Embassy’s statement was the preservation of diplomatic decorum. The Embassy expressed profound dissatisfaction with the “selective dissemination” of interviews regarding the Middle Eastern crisis. It noted that specific media outlets and social media platforms had circulated fragmented segments of official statements, leading to potential misunderstandings.

The Embassy underscored that such actions are inconsistent with the “friendly and fraternal relations” shared by the two nations. Additionally, the Embassy acknowledged the presence of a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who visited the Embassy in Dhaka to sign the book of condolences.
