The Israeli military has issued orders for the temporary evacuation of residents from 53 towns and villages in southern Lebanon, escalating tensions in the region. The directive comes amid a wide-ranging military offensive against the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, which began on Saturday and marks a new phase of hostilities in the Israel-Lebanon border area.
The recent surge in violence was triggered after Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on northern Israel. In response, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) declared they would not allow the group to pose any threat to the state, targeting Hezbollah positions “throughout Lebanon” with coordinated air and ground strikes.
On Monday, air raids struck multiple Hezbollah strongholds, including areas in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that explosions were clearly audible in Beirut’s southern suburbs, particularly the Dahiyeh district, while Israeli warplanes conducted successive bombing runs in the vicinity.
